Description
The decorative tile Rapunzel in Venice by Fairytiles, depicts Rapunzel leaning out of a high balcony in the Fondamenta della Sensa and his dwelling is reminiscent of the one in the fairy tale, an impregnable tower. He scans the waters of the canals reflecting the moon, looking for the boatman of his heart. As soon as he sees him, he unravels his long, heavy braid to the water’s surface, attracting the house cat (Venice was famous for the presence of cats to defend merchant cargoes and the city itself).
Behind the mask, the prince looks up and pushes the boat with his oar towards the barred water gate, to begin the climb towards his beautiful Rapunzel.
In this painting, the two lovers of a folk tale recall the much more unfortunate lovers of the famous Shakespearean drama. From a Venetian balcony to a Veronese balcony is a short step, and in homage to his hometown, the artist has hung the fossilised rib (of a whale, ichthyosaur, or devil, it is yet to be ascertained) under the arch between Piazza delle erbe and Piazza Dante. As popular legend suggests: ‘When an honest and pure-hearted Veronese person passes under it, the rib will fall out’. It hasn’t happened yet, so who’s telling fairy tales now? 😉
