Description
In honor of the cats that helped defeat the nasty plague pandemic at the time of the Serenissima, Mater Domini Mask has created a Cat Mask in papier-mâché with gold leaf and musical applications.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many cats in Venice? Since the times of the Serenissima, the Venetians imported numerous species of cats into the city in conjunction with the various trips to the East to defend themselves from rats.
They were embarked in groups of three or four with a sailor specifically in charge of the cats and they were considered real lucky charms. When the famous plague rat arrived in Venice, the Venetian cats were not enough to fight it and it was decided to import a new species (The Sorians) in large quantities, from Syria and Palestine.
Although the scourge had already exploded in all its virulence, the imported cats contributed in good part to defeat it and began to wander in the courts, streets, squares and homes of the Venetians.
