Description

The Venetian Muta mask, also called Moretta, was so called because it was a black papier-mâché ‘oval’ covered with velvet.

It was a mute mask because women held it up to their faces with a button, which acted as a small bite between the teeth, and so they were restricted in speaking. It was mainly used by servants.
